Butterflies of Monterey County

  • Olivia & Daisy 13766 Center Street Carmel Valley, CA, 93924 United States (map)

Spring is fast approaching! Join us for a celebration of Butterflies of Monterey County on Tue, Apr 16, 2024 at 12:00 PM at Olivia & Daisy Books. This event is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the diverse and colorful butterflies that call Monterey County home. While many know and appreciate the Monarch migration that passes through Pacific Grove, there are 91 species of butterfly here to discover and appreciate.

Come enjoy a presentation and discussion of the research that brought Chris Tenney and Jan Austin's debut field guide, Butterflies of Monterey County, to life. Books available for sale as well as special edition butterfly art from local artist, Lindsey Klinger.

Optional accessible nature walk and butterfly watch at Carmel River to follow, pending favorable conditions.

Chris Tenney is a retired schoolteacher and amateur naturalist. After co-authoring Birds of Monterey County (with Don Roberson), his passion shifted from birds to butterflies. He began an inventory of Monterey County butterflies in 2005 and now collaborates with Professor Ryan Hill and students at UOP Stockton on various studies of the butterfly subgenus Speyeria.

Jan Austin is a writer/photographer with a life-long love of nature. She is a fourth-generation Monterey County resident. She loves ballroom dancing, hiking, comedy improv and time with her dogs Joy and Star. You can find her photography here.

Lindsey Klinger is a Pacific Grove based photographer and artist whose original art, mixed-media, linocut & watercolor feature one-of-a-kind interpretations of butterflies, moths, and the natural world.

A perfect pre-summer primer, this is your chance to appreciate the beauty of these delicate creatures in detail and up close. See you there!
